Taiwan confronts Chinese annexation push and aggressive narrative campaign

The People’s Republic of China is running a large‑scale information campaign that repeatedly claims Taiwan is part of China, aiming to legitimize a possible military annexation. The narrative is reinforced by a massive Chinese military buildup, including a navy and coast guard that vastly outsize Taiwan’s forces.

Taiwan is responding by boosting its own defence capabilities. President Lai Ching‑te announced that defence spending will rise to about 5 % of GDP by 2030, and mandatory military service has been extended. The island is also expanding civil‑defence training and modernising its arsenal with drones and portable missiles. Nevertheless, analysts note that China’s active‑duty forces outnumber Taiwan’s by a factor of ten in many categories, making a direct military confrontation highly asymmetrical.
