Taiwan Defence Minister Wellington Koo says US Pacific Command ties boost defence readiness

Taiwan’s Defence Minister Wellington Koo told reporters that military cooperation with the United States is “far closer than many people imagine.” He said Taiwan is deepening exchanges with the U.S. Pacific Command at all levels, which he said has helped improve the island’s defensive combat capabilities. Koo highlighted that the United States remains Taiwan’s most important international backer and arms supplier despite the lack of formal diplomatic ties.

China has repeatedly condemned the cooperation and stepped up pressure around Taiwan, including coast‑guard operations and drills that simulate a possible blockade. Koo warned that a Chinese maritime blockade would pose “an even greater challenge for China,” risking severe economic damage, heavy international sanctions and domestic political instability for President Xi Jinping’s regime.
