Taiwan defense report highlights PLA focus on joint landing capabilities

Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense has submitted its 2026 report on the People's Liberation Army (PLA) military capabilities to the Legislative Yuan. The report highlights that the PLA is prioritizing the enhancement of joint landing operations and military transformation, with key development goals potentially reaching completion between 2030 and 2035.

Key areas of PLA focus include the development of the Type 076 amphibious assault ship, improved helicopter transport capabilities, and new amphibious landing craft designed for ‘dockless unloading’ to overcome potential damage to Taiwanese ports. The PLA is also integrating lessons from recent international conflicts, such as the Russia-Ukraine war, into its training, specifically regarding drone swarms, electronic warfare, and logistical resilience.

Furthermore, the report notes advancements in military space, cyber, and information support. This includes the deployment of low-orbit communication satellite constellations and the use of artificial intelligence for hybrid warfare. While the PLA is accelerating its preparations for maritime blockades and joint strikes, the Ministry of National Defense maintains that the PLA's current capabilities for a full-scale joint landing operation remain insufficient due to the complexity of maintaining air and sea superiority during such an endeavor.
