Taiwan detains Nvidia employee in AI server smuggling probe
Taiwan prosecutors detained a Nvidia employee, identified by the surname Chang, after raids on his home and workplace on July 24. The detention is part of a broader investigation into the illegal export of Super Micro high‑end AI servers fitted with Nvidia chips to China, Hong Kong and Macau, which breaches U.S. export controls that have been in place since 2022.
Seven individuals have been held, including the Nvidia employee, two workers from Super Micro, and a staff member from Albatron Technology. They are accused of forging documents to ship roughly 50 servers, some cleared by Taiwan Customs and routed to China via Japan. The probe follows earlier rounds in May, which detained three people, and in June, which detained two Super Micro workers. In March, the U.S. Justice Department charged three people linked to Super Micro for smuggling about $2.5 billion of AI technology to China.
Taiwan, the world’s largest producer of advanced AI chips, has tightened its export controls to prevent the transfer of sensitive technology to China, which claims sovereignty over the island despite Taiwan’s objections.
