Nvidia employee detained in Taiwan over AI chip smuggling
Taiwanese prosecutors detained a Nvidia employee, surnamed Chang, after raiding his home and workplace on July 24. The arrest is part of an ongoing probe into the illegal export of Super Micro AI servers equipped with Nvidia chips to China, Hong Kong and Macau. Authorities say the suspects forged documents to ship roughly 50 high‑end servers, some cleared by Taiwan customs and routed through Japan, in violation of U.S. export controls that have barred such chips from mainland China since 2022.
Seven people are now in custody, including the Nvidia employee, two Super Micro workers, one Albatron Technology staff member and other associates. The investigation builds on earlier rounds in May and June that detained three and two individuals respectively, and follows a March U.S. Justice Department indictment of three people linked to Super Micro for smuggling about $2.5 billion of AI technology to China. Taiwan, the world’s largest producer of advanced chips, has tightened its own export controls to curb technology transfers to China. Nvidia has declined comment on the employee’s status but reiterated its compliance with U.S. export rules.
