Taiwan detects eight Chinese naval vessels near its waters
Taiwan's Ministry of National Defence announced on June 18, 2026 that eight People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) vessels were operating around the island, detected up to 06:00 UTC+8. The ROC Armed Forces monitored the activity and responded, noting no Chinese aircraft were observed.
The report follows earlier alerts on June 17 and June 16 that six PLAN ships were spotted near Taiwan's territorial waters. The ministry also referenced ongoing domestic defence developments, including the first Taiwanese‑built submarine commencing a new series of sea trials from Kaohsiung Port.
These sightings occur amid heightened maritime activity by China around Taiwan, underscoring continued regional security tensions.
