Taiwan detects PLA aircraft and naval vessels conducting joint drills

Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense reported increased military activity from the People's Liberation Army (PLA), detecting 20 aircraft sorties, six PLAN vessels, and five official ships operating around the island. Notably, 12 of these aircraft sorties crossed the median line and entered Taiwan's Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) during what was described as a “Joint Combat Readiness Patrol” and “Air-Sea Joint Drill.”

While China's military capabilities in terms of aircraft, missiles, and drones have reached unprecedented levels, Taiwan's Ministry of Defense suggests that Beijing is currently focusing on perfecting “blockade and control joint” operations rather than an immediate large-scale amphibious invasion. The ministry notes that the PLA still faces limitations in executing a successful massive assault, suggesting a strategic shift toward less costly options such as maritime quarantines and continuous pressure.

This escalation occurs amid China's internal political landscape, as Xi Jinping prepares for the 2027 Communist Party Congress following significant military purges.
