Taiwan discusses Alaska natural gas procurement amid CPC financial pressure

Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs has reported progress in negotiations with U.S. developers regarding an Alaska liquefied natural gas (LNG) project. The plan involves purchasing 6 million metric tons of LNG annually, with potential investment reaching up to $4.4 billion. If successful, the project could begin supplying gas to Taiwan as early as 2032.

However, the initiative faces scrutiny due to the financial state of CPC Corporation, Taiwan's state-owned energy company. Director-General of the Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics, Chen Shu-tzu, warned that if supplementary budgets are not approved, CPC's cumulative losses this year could reach NT$127.6 billion, nearly equaling its total capital of NT$130.1 billion. Such losses could hinder CPC's ability to freeze oil prices, impact crude oil supplies, and increase inflationary pressures in Taiwan.

While U.S. President Donald Trump has publicly characterized the cooperation as a major achievement, Taiwanese officials have maintained a more cautious stance, noting that final agreements and specific commercial terms remain under negotiation.
