Taiwan drills mobile HIMARS rockets against China

Taiwan's army conducted a live‑fire exercise with its newly acquired mobile rocket system HIMARS, simulating a strike on hypothetical Chinese invasion forces. The drill demonstrated the system’s ability to fire, then immediately relocate to avoid enemy radar and counter‑attack, as described by unit commander Ko Ming‑pin: "Our HIMARS demonstrated solid combat capabilities and successfully completed the training."

The rockets, produced by Lockheed Martin, have a range of about 300 km and can target sites across the Taiwan Strait, including China’s Fujian province. They are paired with domestically developed Thunderbolt‑2000 launchers to engage Chinese vessels as they leave ports or attempt beach landings. The exercise underscores Taiwan’s shift toward a more mobile, asymmetric defence strategy amid sustained Chinese military activity around the island.
