Taiwan drone exports surge 55-fold amid supply chain shifts

Taiwan's drone industry is experiencing rapid growth as the nation positions itself as a key player in the non-Chinese supply chain. According to National Security Council Deputy Secretary-General Lin Fei-fan, drone exports from Taiwan have increased 55-fold over the past year, with major markets including Poland, the Czech Republic, and the United States. In the first quarter, export values reached $115 million, surpassing the total for all of 2025.

The government is working to bolster domestic capabilities through additional budgets and the 'Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Special Act' to reduce reliance on Chinese components. The goal is to reach a production value of 40 billion TWD by 2030. Meanwhile, in Taichung, local officials face criticism regarding the lack of progress on establishing dedicated drone test flight sites, despite the city's ambitions to develop the sector.

This industrial expansion occurs amid shifting global regulations. While Taiwan seeks to expand its footprint, Chinese manufacturer DJI faces regulatory pressures in the United States, where the FCC and new tariff policies have increased costs and restrictions on foreign-made drones.
