Taiwan Education Minister Zheng Ying-yao faces criticism over Chinese scholar appointment and school‑meeting reform
Taiwan’s education minister Zheng Ying-yao said the composition of the evaluation committee at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University’s Institute of Communication was flawed after media reports that Chinese Ministry of Education “Changjiang Scholar” Wei Ran and Shanghai Jiao‑Tong University professor Guo Liangwen were appointed as committee members. Zheng announced that the higher‑education department is conducting a comprehensive review of the committee.
The Legislative Yuan’s Education and Culture Committee voted to return two education‑related regulations on school‑meeting procedures to the ministry for further examination. Zheng expressed regret over the decision, highlighting that the new system had cut case entries from 82 % to 22 % and improved earlier shortcomings. Teacher unions are divided, with some calling for the abolition of school meetings and others urging revision of the rules.
