Taiwan enhances maritime surveillance amid Chinese activity

Taiwan is enhancing its maritime surveillance and environmental monitoring capabilities in response to increasing maritime activity from China. Following an incident where two Chinese nationals landed on the coast of New Taipei City via rubber boat, legislator Chen Kuan-ting has called for the establishment of a ‘smart coastal sensing network.’ This proposed system would integrate AI, fixed autonomous reconnaissance systems, and drones to provide multi-layered verification and reduce human error in radar monitoring.

In a related move to strengthen maritime governance, President Lai Ching-te oversaw the launch of two new research vessels built by CSBC Corporation. These vessels, ranging from 100 to 300 tons, are designed to collect hydrographic, oceanographic, and biological data. One vessel focuses on shallow-water ecological studies, while the other conducts broader surveys of the seabed and hydrology. President Lai emphasized that improving maritime knowledge is essential for national security, noting that China has utilized research and coast guard vessels to conduct ‘gray zone’ operations around the island.
