Taiwan Examination Yuan affirms legal payout of public‑sector pensions

The Legislative Yuan passed a law last year to halt cuts to public‑sector pensions, retroactively applying the 2023 replacement‑rate standard. Retired civil servants have begun receiving difference payments covering the period up to July 2026.

The Examination Yuan clarified that the reform mainly affects the old “gratuity” pension scheme, which is funded directly from the government budget. It stated that the increased payouts are lawful and can be financed through budget adjustments or reserve funds unless the Constitutional Court declares the amendment unconstitutional. The Executive Yuan has also filed a constitutional interpretation request and reiterated respect for the Examination Yuan’s authority. In addition, the Executive Yuan announced further salary adjustments for civil servants and military personnel, including a fixed‑amount increase and a planned general raise starting January 2027.
