Taiwan Executive Yuan refuses to countersign four passed laws
A political confrontation has escalated in Taiwan as the Executive Yuan has refused to countersign four laws passed by the Legislative Yuan. This move has sparked a debate over constitutional authority and the balance of power between the branches of government.
Legislative Yuan Speaker Han Kuo-yu criticized the Executive Yuan, stating that no governing power is greater than the Constitution and warning that refusing to execute laws undermines the constitutional order. In response, Premier Cho Jung-tai defended the decision, asserting that preventing unconstitutional bills from being implemented is a necessary responsibility to protect the nation.
Taiwan People's Party Chairman Huang Kuo-chang accused President Lai Ching-te and Premier Cho of attempting to bypass the legislature and acting as if they hold sole constitutional interpretation powers. Huang argued that the refusal to publish laws effectively sidelines the 113 legislators elected by the people, characterizing the administration's actions as an attempt to avoid political responsibility.
