Taiwan expands circular economy initiatives through recycling and device repair

Taiwanese companies and government agencies are expanding circular economy initiatives focused on resource recycling and electronic waste reduction.

PX Mart is partnering with ECOCO and Olide to expand smart recycling machines to approximately half of its stores by the end of the year. These machines, which have already been deployed in 240 PX Mart locations, allow consumers to recycle items like HDPE milk bottles in exchange for shopping credits. The partnership also introduced a household cleaning product featuring a Digital Product Passport (DPP) to provide transparency regarding recycled materials.

In the telecommunications sector, Taiwan Mobile has launched a promotion to encourage consumers to repair rather than replace mobile devices. The company is offering discounted Apple original battery replacements for iPhone 12 through 15 series models. This initiative is part of a broader effort to extend device lifecycles and reduce electronic waste. Taiwan Mobile has also collaborated with the Ministry of Environment to establish carbon footprint rules for mobile phone recycling and circular services, aligning with national goals for net-zero emissions and resource circulation management.
