Taiwan expands drug testing initiatives in schools and via diplomatic aid

Taiwan's Ministry of Education is planning to introduce saliva-based rapid drug testing in schools to combat the rise of emerging drugs like etomidate, which are often disguised in e-cigarettes. While saliva testing is considered more accurate and convenient than traditional urine tests, the implementation is currently awaiting legislative approval for amendments to the ‘Narcotics Hazard Prevention Act’. The Ministry has identified over 8,000 students at risk and plans to initially procure testing kits for this group.

In a separate development involving international cooperation, Taiwan's Investigation Bureau is providing 300 sets of its self-developed drug rapid testing kits to Palau. Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung will present these kits to the Palau Ministry of Justice during his visit to assist with local anti-drug efforts. The kits are noted for their ability to detect a wide variety of substances with rapid results, following previous successful testing in Palau.
