Taiwan expands health insurance coverage for SMA treatments

Taiwan's National Health Insurance now provides comprehensive coverage for three major Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) therapies: intrathecal injection, oral medication, and gene therapy. These treatments aim to slow muscle degeneration and improve motor and swallowing functions, helping patients regain independence.

Medical professionals note that while gene therapy is primarily for infants diagnosed within six months of birth, intrathecal and oral treatments serve as vital options for children and adults. However, insurance regulations specify that patients can generally only choose one type of covered medication for life, unless severe side effects necessitate a change.

As treatment efficacy improves, patients are increasingly seeking social participation. However, individuals with SMA face significant challenges regarding physical accessibility. Advocacy groups, such as the Taiwan Window of Life Charity Association, are highlighting the lack of detailed accessibility information in public spaces. They have launched campaigns to encourage citizens to upload photos of ramps, elevators, and accessible toilets to Google Maps to help people with disabilities plan their outings more effectively.
