Taiwan faces surge in AI‑driven fraud costing over NT$300 billion

A rapid increase in artificial‑intelligence‑enabled scams has been reported across Taiwan, with seven newly identified tactics such as deep‑fake endorsements, AI‑generated voice impersonations, algorithm‑targeted ads and mass creation of fake websites. In the first half of 2026, the country's cyber‑crime unit recorded 7,4396 fraud cases that stole NT$317 billion, of which AI‑assisted investment scams alone accounted for NT$134.7 billion. Experts say the technology lowers the cost of producing convincing fake media, allowing fraud rings to scale from dozens to hundreds of participants and to funnel victims through platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Threads, YouTube and LINE. Authorities urge a “zero‑trust” approach: verify official sources, avoid private LINE links, unknown apps or requests for personal data before any transaction.
