Taiwan farmers seek relief after heavy rains cause massive crop damage

Heavy rainfall in southern Taiwan has caused significant damage to agricultural sectors, with total losses across the island exceeding 100 million TWD. Bamboo shoot farmers in areas such as Guanmiao, Guiren, and Longqi are facing severe difficulties as prolonged flooding has caused young shoots to rot underground.

Local officials and farmers have noted that the damage is often difficult to identify from the surface, as the rot only becomes apparent once the soil is excavated. City Councilor Chen Huang-yu has called on the Ministry of Agriculture to relax the criteria for recognizing crop damage and to simplify the application process for relief. He emphasized that the government must look beyond surface-level appearances to account for the actual losses incurred by farmers due to extreme weather.
