Taiwan FDA flags eight oil producers for carcinogenic levels in camellia oil

The Taiwan Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has reported that eight oil production facilities have produced camellia oil exceeding the legal limit for benzo[a]pyrene, a known carcinogen. The latest case involves “Ma You Che” Premium Cold-Pressed Camellia Oil produced by Tonggu Industrial Co., Ltd. in Chiayi City. Testing by the Taoyuan Health Bureau found benzo[a]pyrene levels at 2.1 μg/kg, slightly above the 2.0 μg/kg limit.

Of the 636 bottles produced in the affected batch, 435 have been removed from shelves, and retailers have opened returns to consumers. The manufacturer noted that their own independent tests showed compliance and intends to apply for re-testing. The raw materials used were imported camellia seeds from China.

To address the rising number of non-compliant producers, the FDA is organizing industry exchange meetings to analyze production risks. Experts suggest that benzo[a]pyrene is often generated when proteins and lipids undergo thermal decomposition at temperatures exceeding 180 degrees Celsius. Recommendations for producers include maintaining seed hulls during roasting to act as a thermal buffer or keeping temperatures below 180 degrees Celsius. The FDA plans to conduct on-site guidance for the eight identified companies starting in September to review and improve production processes.
