Taiwan Foreign Minister visits Palau for Pacific Islands Forum

Taiwanese Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung is visiting Palau to participate in activities related to the 55th Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) summit, held from August 30 to September 4. During the visit, Lin aims to deepen bilateral ties through trade, tourism, and smart healthcare cooperation. He met with Palau President Surangel S. Whipps, Jr. and visited the Palau National Hospital to discuss integrating digital medical information systems and talent training into local healthcare infrastructure.

The United States State Department has expressed strong support for Taiwan’s continued participation in the PIF, describing Taiwan as a “reliable, like-minded, and democratic partner” that contributes to the region's prosperity. U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau is also scheduled to visit the region, including Palau, Micronesia, the Solomon Islands, and Kiribati, to strengthen ties with Pacific Island governments.

Taiwan has participated in the PIF as a development partner since 1993. The current mission includes a delegation of business representatives intended to explore investment opportunities in Palau, focusing on sectors such as digital resilience, renewable energy, and infrastructure.
