Taiwan Foreign Minister warns of threats to international order

Taiwanese Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung argues that the rules-based international order is facing significant strain as authoritarian states attempt to reshape global norms to serve their own interests. He notes that fundamental principles, such as the peaceful settlement of disputes and the prohibition of the use of force enshrined in the United Nations Charter, are being increasingly challenged.

Lin highlights that the Indo-Pacific, specifically the first island chain, represents a critical frontline for these tensions. He points to China’s use of “gray-zone” tactics—including military intimidation, cyber intrusions, and economic coercion—as an attempt to unilaterally alter existing rules.

Taiwan maintains its commitment to the status quo, emphasizing that regional stability is a global concern. The Taiwan Strait remains a vital artery for international supply chains and one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes, making its security essential to global prosperity and the preservation of democracy and self-determination.
