Taiwan government agencies targeted by AI-assisted cyberattacks
Taiwan's Ministry of Digital Affairs reported that government agencies were targeted last month by an overseas cyberattack campaign utilizing artificial intelligence. The investigation revealed a hybrid approach that combined manual operations with AI agent-assisted attacks, such as Open Claw.
While the Taiwanese government characterized the incident as a mix of human and AI activity that was successfully handled, security researchers from the company Dream described the operation as an “end-to-end autonomous attack.” Findings indicated that up to eight AI agents operated simultaneously across 21 government systems over a four-day period. The breach reportedly compromised at least 85 government accounts and resulted in the extraction of more than 2,500 personnel records. The activity also expanded toward energy companies and Taiwan’s nuclear-safety agency.
Although the Ministry of Digital Affairs did not explicitly name a perpetrator, the presence of Simplified Chinese in materials linked to the attack has contributed to suspicions of China-linked involvement. In response, the Taiwanese government has established new protective guidelines and reinforced system monitoring to mitigate future AI-derived threats.
