Taiwan High Speed Rail power bank fire causes passenger evacuation

A power bank spontaneously combusted on a Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR) train on the morning of August 10, 2026. The incident occurred on northbound train 630 between Changhua and Taichung, specifically in the fourth carriage.

THSR staff responded by using fire extinguishers and fire blankets to suppress the flames. Passengers in the affected carriage were evacuated to other sections of the train to ensure safety. No injuries were reported, and the train continued its journey to Taichung station without significant delays.

Following the incident, experts have discussed the challenges of managing lithium battery fires in enclosed spaces. While dry powder extinguishers were used, some noted that the resulting dust can impair visibility and breathing during evacuations. Professor Su Chung-hui from Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology reportedly assisted by directing the use of water to cool the device, a method suggested by experts for managing small lithium battery thermal runaway.

THSR has advised passengers to keep power banks within sight and to avoid using any devices that appear deformed or exhibit abnormal heating. The company noted that passengers may be held legally and civilly liable for damages or delays caused by improper use or storage of such devices.
