Southern Taiwan faces heavy flooding and work suspensions
Southern Taiwan is experiencing severe flooding and heavy rainfall caused by a low-pressure zone and the southwest monsoon. The extreme weather has led to significant disruptions across Tainan, Kaohsiung, and Pingtung.
In response to the heavy rain, local governments in Tainan, Kaohsiung, and Pingtung have announced the suspension of work and classes for August 24. In Kaohsiung, rainfall has been particularly intense, with some areas recording 684 mm of rain over three days, representing nearly half of the city's annual average. Authorities have evacuated 2,615 people in Kaohsiung and deployed 137 mobile water pumps to manage flooding.
Pingtung has also faced challenges, with 115 people evacuated and several roads closed due to the risk of landslides and debris flows. In Tainan, heavy rain caused flooding in low-lying areas, necessitating the deployment of hundreds of mobile pumps and pumping stations. Emergency services and the military are assisting with flood prevention and disaster response efforts across the affected southern regions.
