Taiwan intensifies road safety measures to combat motorcycle fatalities

Authorities in Taiwan are intensifying efforts to reduce road fatalities, particularly involving motorcycles. In Pingtung County, officials have launched a multi-departmental deployment to address a rise in fatal accidents recorded in July. The county government is focusing on high-risk areas, targeting issues such as distracted driving, running red lights, and driving under the influence. Specific measures include improving road infrastructure, enhancing law enforcement, and launching safety campaigns for the upcoming school season and Mid-Autumn Festival.

Simultaneously, the Ministry of Transportation and Communications has partnered with Kaohsiung Medical University Chung Mo Memorial Hospital to release a safety campaign video titled ‘Speed vs. Risk’. The initiative uses medical expertise and simulated crash footage to demonstrate the physical impact of high speeds. Medical professionals noted that a motorcycle collision at 90 km/h carries an impact force comparable to falling from a building higher than ten stories. While motorcycle fatalities in Taiwan decreased by 21% in the first half of the year, they still account for 58% of total road deaths, prompting continued calls for stricter speed management.
