Taiwan investigates AI chip smuggling and semiconductor talent poaching

Authorities in Taiwan are investigating major schemes involving the illegal transfer of high-end AI technology and the poaching of semiconductor talent.

In a significant smuggling case, prosecutors have indicted employees from NVIDIA and Supermicro for allegedly conspiring with Tiger Technology to smuggle AI servers to China. The scheme involved forging documents and using transit hubs in Indonesia, Japan, and Hong Kong to bypass export controls. Prosecutors estimate illegal profits exceeded 600 million TWD. Investigations suggest that Tiger Technology used fake server setups to pass audits and allegedly hosted lavish celebrations for complicit staff.

Separately, Taiwan's Ministry of Justice Investigation Bureau has uncovered widespread efforts by Chinese firms to recruit semiconductor talent through deceptive practices. These companies reportedly use shell corporations, foreign investment structures, and non-Chinese nominees to operate illegally in Taiwan. Over the past six years, authorities have investigated 166 cases of illegal operation and talent poaching, with many involving chip design and semiconductor equipment. These tactics aim to bypass regulations and secure advanced technical expertise from Taiwan's critical chip industry.
