Taiwan investigates missing weight loss injections and cross-border procurement trends
Authorities in Taiwan are investigating the distribution of GLP-1 receptor agonist injections, commonly known as “weight loss shots.” In Tainan, the Health Bureau fined the Xinhua District Health Center 100,000 TWD after discovering that out of 780 purchased doses, only five remained in stock, while 775 doses lacked corresponding physician prescriptions. The case has been referred to the Agency Against Corruption for further investigation regarding potential illegal distribution or improper benefits.
The Taiwan Food and Drug Administration (TFDA) has noted a rise in the use of these medications and has conducted 448 inspections this year, resulting in 80 violations and fines totaling 2.36 million TWD. The TFDA emphasized that these are prescription-only drugs and reminded travelers that they must carry a physician's prescription and documentation for personal use when entering the country, with quantities limited to a maximum six-month supply.
Regionally, a trend has emerged where South Korean citizens travel to Japan to purchase GLP-1 medications, such as Mounjaro, to take advantage of price differences. Experts warn that cross-border procurement can disrupt medical follow-ups and complicate the management of side effects, which include gastrointestinal issues, hypoglycemia, and nausea.
