Taiwan launches pilot rehabilitation program for stroke patients

Taiwan's National Health Insurance Administration has launched a pilot program for rehabilitation wards to support stroke patients transitioning back to daily life. With an investment of approximately 300 million TWD, the initiative involves 10 hospitals nationwide and aims to provide high-intensity inpatient rehabilitation for roughly 1,600 patients annually.

The program focuses on functional recovery and independent living, moving beyond basic mobility to include essential daily tasks such as eating, dressing, and using the restroom. A key feature is the use of simulated home environments within hospitals, allowing patients to practice navigating real-world scenarios before returning home.

Premier Cho Jung-tai noted that as Taiwan enters a super-aged society, health policy must shift from merely treating diseases to restoring health and preventing disability. This approach aims to reduce the caregiving burden on families and improve the quality of life for patients.
