Taiwan lawmaker Xu Xinying unveils education and childcare reforms

Taiwanese legislator Xu Xinying returned to her alma mater, Yamazaki Elementary School in Hsinchu County, to meet students, parents and local officials. In her speech she thanked township mayor Xu Wei‑jie and pledged to improve the region’s education and childcare landscape.

She proposed expanding early‑childhood services, including more two‑year‑old classes, additional public childcare slots and places in non‑profit kindergartens, as well as establishing a temporary childcare system to end lottery‑based enrolment. Xu also advocated that every primary and secondary student receive a tablet, promoting AI‑based learning and using technology to reduce teachers’ administrative workload. Further commitments include seeking budget for child health, special‑education support, parent‑child spaces and school safety, aiming to give families a safer “runway” for their children’s dreams.

Xu highlighted the need to support the “sandwich generation” of parents, stating, “Every child's eyes contain a huge dream, and adults must build a safe runway for them.”
