Taiwan leaders address cross-strait pressure and economic resilience

Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te and Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim have outlined strategies to counter Chinese political and military pressure while maintaining economic stability. President Lai emphasized strengthening national defense and enhancing economic resilience by diversifying trade partners and supporting small and medium-sized enterprises. He also noted plans for social welfare expansions and a proposed 10,000 TWD cash distribution to citizens to share economic gains.

Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim highlighted Taiwan's role in the global AI supply chain and its democratic resilience despite facing grey-zone coercion and disinformation. She noted that despite geopolitical complexities, public confidence in Taiwan's economy remains high.

Separately, Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung reported that Taiwan's five-year bid to join the CPTPP remains stalled due to political interference from China. While some member states privately support Taiwan's application, they have been unable to make public statements due to political pressure. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is currently seeking more transparent review processes to prevent indefinite delays.
