Taiwan leaders clash over defense and dialogue on August 23 anniversary

On the 68th anniversary of the August 23 Artillery Battle, political leaders in Taiwan offered opposing views on cross-strait stability and national security during commemorations in Kinmen.

President Lai Ching-te emphasized that strengthening national defense is the only guarantee for peace. He noted that China's authoritarian expansion and grey-zone tactics in Kinmen waters threaten regional stability. To bolster self-defense, Lai announced that the national defense budget will exceed 1 trillion TWD next year, representing more than 3% of GDP. He also highlighted increased compensation for military personnel and investments in emerging technologies like AI and drones.

In contrast, Kuomintang (KMT) Chairperson Cheng Li-wen called on President Lai to recognize the ‘1992 Consensus’ based on the Republic of China Constitution to enable cross-strait dialogue and exchange. Cheng criticized the current administration for allegedly undermining the Constitution, disrespecting the legislature, and creating a ‘green terror’ through the restriction of press freedom. She urged the government to focus on maintaining peace through constitutional principles rather than pursuing independence, which she warned could lead to catastrophic conflict.
