Taiwan legal disputes highlight election bribery and fitness industry contract issues

In Taiwan, a local community leader candidate has been granted 300,000 TWD bail following allegations of vote-buying. The candidate is accused of providing a gift basket containing daily necessities such as soy sauce and toothpaste to members of a community management committee. Legal experts note that while a 30 TWD threshold exists for promotional items, gifts to community organizations are treated with high scrutiny because committee members hold significant influence over residents.

Separately, legal disputes in the fitness industry have surfaced involving a single business operator. One case involved a Pilates student who sought a refund for unused classes; the court ordered a minimal refund after determining that specific contract clauses regarding monthly class distribution rendered many sessions void due to expiration.

In another case, a fitness instructor was sued by her employer for 300,000 TWD after resigning shortly after training. Court rulings on such labor disputes varied by region: one court significantly reduced the penalty by re-evaluating the actual cost of professional training, while another court dismissed the claim entirely, ruling that the company failed to provide adequate compensation to justify a mandatory service period.
