Taiwan Legislative Yuan negotiates UAV budget and referendum law

Negotiations in Taiwan's Legislative Yuan regarding the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) budget and amendments to the Referendum Act have reached a temporary impasse. The Kuomintang (KMT) caucus agreed to postpone the vote on the Referendum Act amendment, which proposes a ‘one vote, multiple cases’ system, in an effort to facilitate the passage of opposition-led UAV budget versions.

There are currently 14 different versions of the UAV legislation under discussion. The Executive Yuan has proposed a five-year, NT$210 billion special budget focused on enhancing defense capabilities. In contrast, the KMT has proposed a six-year, NT$240 billion plan. The Taiwan People's Party (TPP) has suggested returning the funding to the annual budget with no upper limit on procurement amounts.

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) legislator Chuang Jui-hsiung expressed concerns regarding the opposition's versions, specifically criticizing provisions that would allow political parties to recommend members to oversight committees. The DPP argues that such political involvement in military procurement could undermine national defense and loyalty, potentially hindering the development of asymmetric warfare capabilities.
