Taiwan Legislative Yuan to negotiate unmanned vehicle regulations

Taiwan's Legislative Yuan is scheduled to hold negotiations on August 20 regarding 14 different versions of proposed unmanned vehicle regulation drafts. The Executive Yuan has urged opposition parties to support its version of the 'Special Act for the Procurement of Defense Autonomy Unmanned Vehicles,' arguing that supporting the military requires supporting the administration's legislative framework.

The Kuomintang (KMT) caucus has countered this stance, proposing its own 'Draft Act for the Technological Development and Procurement of Defense Autonomy Unmanned Vehicles.' The KMT's proposal outlines a 240 billion TWD investment over six years, which exceeds the Executive Yuan's 210 billion TWD plan.

The KMT advocates for a system based on annual budgets and long-term institutional frameworks. This approach aims to allow the legislature to conduct yearly evaluations of industrial policies, procurement results, and localization progress. KMT representatives emphasized that their focus is on fiscal discipline, ensuring procurement meets actual combat needs, and establishing an autonomous supply chain rather than opposing defense development.
