Taiwan legislature passes school health and remote education reforms

Taiwan's Legislative Yuan has passed amendments to the School Health Act and the Remote Area School Education Development Act, introducing new frameworks for campus management and teacher support.

The School Health Act amendment provides schools with a legal basis to manage or restrict the use of mobile devices to protect students' physical and mental health. In response, the Taiwan Education Industry Union has called on the Ministry of Education to establish consistent national principles. The union expressed concerns that without centralized guidelines, schools might implement varying rules, increasing the administrative and communication burden on frontline teachers.

Simultaneously, the amendment to the Remote Area School Education Development Act aims to strengthen support for teachers in remote regions. The legislation seeks to integrate public and private resources to provide professional consultation, resource sharing, and cross-school exchanges. This initiative is intended to reduce high turnover rates among remote area teachers by moving from simple resource subsidies to a systemic support model.
