Taiwan leverages semiconductor strength to bolster global partnerships

At the SEMICON Taiwan trade show, Taiwanese leadership emphasized the island’s role as a critical and reliable supplier of advanced semiconductors for the global artificial intelligence revolution. President Lai Ching-te stated that Taiwanese companies are expanding globally to “let resilience create shared prosperity,” framing the nation’s semiconductor strength as being rooted in democracy and the rule of law.

Taiwan is navigating a complex balance between maintaining its domestic industry and meeting international demands for overseas production. Economy Minister Kung Ming-hsin announced that Taiwanese companies plan an additional $20 billion in investment in the United States. This follows previous commitments, including TSMC’s approximately $265 billion investment in Arizona factories.

As the producer of roughly 90% of the world’s advanced logic chips, Taiwan’s technology sector serves as a significant tool for diplomacy. While the European Union is seeking deeper collaboration through its Chips Act 2.0, Taiwan also faces pressure from the United States regarding manufacturing locations. Recent discussions have involved deals to increase U.S. investment in exchange for reduced export tariffs, though uncertainty remains regarding future semiconductor trade measures and potential tariffs for companies not manufacturing within the U.S.
