Taiwan lowers elderly driver license renewal age to 70

Taiwan's Ministry of Transportation and Communications will implement a new management system for elderly drivers starting May 31, 2026. Under the new regulations, the age threshold for driver's license renewal will be lowered from 75 to 70 years old.

The policy aims to address traffic safety concerns in an aging society by requiring regular health checks and updates to traffic safety knowledge. Drivers who receive a renewal notice will have a two-year buffer period to complete the process. Failure to renew before the deadline may result in fines ranging from 1,800 to 3,600 TWD, as well as driving prohibitions or license revocation.

To encourage safer mobility, the government is offering incentives for seniors who choose to stop driving. Those who voluntarily surrender all vehicle licenses will receive two years of TPASS and public transportation benefits, with a maximum monthly rebate of 1,500 TWD, totaling up to 36,000 TWD over two years. These credits can be used for buses, MRT, long-distance coaches, and the Taiwan Railways Administration.
