Taiwan marks National Disaster Prevention Day with resilience initiatives

In observance of National Disaster Prevention Day and the 27th anniversary of the 921 earthquake, various regions in Taiwan have launched initiatives to enhance community resilience and public preparedness.

In Nantou County, over 2,000 people participated in an event at the 921 Memorial Park. County Magistrate Xu Shu-hua emphasized the importance of transforming disaster experience into resilience. The event featured demonstrations of emergency kits, earthquake drills such as “drop, cover, and hold on,” and displays of modern rescue equipment including firefighting robots and drones. The county has also established 19 resilient communities to strengthen local response networks.

In Kaohsiung, the Dingjin Division of the Kaohsiung City Fire Bureau has partnered with local retailers to create one-stop disaster prevention zones. These areas allow citizens to purchase essential emergency supplies, such as survival kits, flashlights, and dry food, during routine shopping. Firefighters are also conducting on-site education to promote earthquake safety steps and the importance of maintaining updated emergency kits.
