Taiwan medical groups launch initiatives to boost blood and stem cell supplies
Taiwanese medical and civic organizations are launching various initiatives to bolster blood and stem cell supplies. The Tzu Chi Bone Marrow Center has begun pilot testing a non-invasive buccal swab registration method. This new technology, which uses a cotton swab to collect DNA from the mouth, is expected to be fully implemented next year to replace traditional blood draws, making it easier for younger donors to join the registry.
In central Taiwan, Changhua Christian Hospital has initiated a massive blood donation drive to address critical shortages. The Taichung Blood Donation Center reported that Type O blood supplies are currently at a critical level. Medical staff and the public have been called upon to assist as seasonal factors have impacted donation rates.
Additionally, Lions Clubs International District 300C-1 has announced a large-scale community project. The district plans to host 85 blood donation events over the coming year, with a target of collecting 17,000 bags of blood to support medical needs.
