Taiwan Ministry of Education to expand junior high school safety staff to 2,000

The Executive Yuan has approved a three-year plan by the Ministry of Education to significantly expand campus safety personnel in junior high schools. From October 1, 2024, to July 31, 2029, the central government will invest 1.2 billion TWD annually, totaling 3.6 billion TWD over the period.

The initiative aims to increase the number of dedicated campus safety staff from the current 620 to 2,000. Deployment will be based on school size: schools with fewer than six classes will receive one staff member, those with seven to 36 classes will receive two, and schools with more than 37 classes will receive three. This plan is expected to cover 966 public and private junior high schools nationwide.

The primary objectives are to support teachers by handling sudden classroom conflicts, protect students during emergencies, and prevent campus bullying and drug abuse. The personnel will assist with security patrols, student accompaniment, and contacting parents during incidents. To ensure professionalism, the Ministry will subsidize training in areas such as emergency response, drug prevention, and legal practices. The program is a joint effort between central and local governments, with the central government subsidizing 86% to 90% of the costs depending on local financial capacity.
