Taiwan Ministry of Labor to increase marriage leave to 14 days

Taiwan's Ministry of Labor has announced a proposed amendment to the Labor Leave Rules, increasing marriage leave from 8 days to 14 days. The new regulation is scheduled to take effect on October 1. To alleviate the financial burden on employers, the government will provide subsidies for the wages of the additional six days of leave.

Under the new rules, employees who have already registered their marriage but have not yet exhausted their current 8-day leave by the implementation date will be eligible for the extended 14-day period. The leave days do not include regular rest days, weekends, or public holidays, meaning the actual time off may exceed 14 days.

This move is part of a broader population strategy introduced by President Lai Ching-te to support families. While the marriage leave amendment is proceeding through administrative channels, other proposed measures—such as extending maternity leave from 8 to 12 weeks and paternity leave from 7 to 14 days—require legislative approval through the Gender Equality in Employment Act and do not yet have a confirmed implementation date.
