Taiwan officials and politicians address alleged cross-strait repression

Taiwanese authorities and political figures are responding to incidents involving alleged cross-strait repression and political interference. Prosecutors have indicted five individuals in connection with a staged car accident targeting comedian Huang Yi-hao in September. The incident is alleged to have been funded by individuals from mainland China to prevent the comedian from performing following his comments regarding Chinese leadership.

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Taipei mayoral candidate Shen Po-yang has called for a comprehensive legal framework to combat cross-strait repression, noting that such threats often bypass legislative attention. DPP spokesperson Wu Cheng described the attack on the comedian as an act approaching terrorism that violates Taiwan's national security and democratic rule of law.

In a separate matter, Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) denied entry to mainland Chinese actor Zhang Linghe, despite his popularity from the drama ‘Zhu Yu’. The MAC cited concerns over Zhang's previous social media posts regarding Taiwan's status and his participation in United Front activities, such as the Straits Forum. The Chinese Affairs Office criticized the decision as political manipulation that hinders cultural exchange.
