Taiwan officials clarify 130,000 social housing unit target

Taiwanese officials are addressing concerns regarding the government's commitment to constructing 130,000 social housing units. Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen criticized reports that the central government might cancel plans for 100,000 units, noting that the 30,000 units currently under construction or completed were largely managed by local governments. She urged the central government to uphold its promises to ensure housing justice for young people and vulnerable populations.

In response to allegations of a policy reversal, Minister of the Interior Liu Shih-fang clarified that the 130,000-unit target remains unchanged. He explained that the construction model is shifting from direct government management to a more diverse approach involving cooperation with local governments and urban renewal projects. The 30,000-unit figure cited in recent reports refers to the first phase of projects already identified for implementation. The Ministry intends to work with local authorities to identify additional land to meet the long-term goal.
