Taiwan opposition parties condemn Premier Cho's refusal to countersign laws
Opposition parties in Taiwan are intensifying their criticism of Premier Cho Jung-tai regarding his refusal to countersign passed legislation. The Kuomintang (KMT) has accused the Premier of using the countersignature power as a political weapon to effectively veto laws passed by the legislature, arguing that this action bypasses constitutional procedures and undermines the separation of powers.
KMT representatives claim that the Constitution provides a specific remedy for the Executive Yuan through the reconsideration process if a law is deemed unworkable, rather than allowing the Premier to unilaterally refuse to countersign. They argue this behavior constitutes ‘administrative dictatorship’ that places the Premier above the President and the legislature.
Simultaneously, the Taiwan People's Party (TPP) has proposed a motion in the Legislative Yuan to formally condemn Premier Cho. The TPP alleges that the administration has used the refusal to countersign to block various bills, including the ‘Taiwan Child Growth and Future Account Act’ and the ‘Cable Television Act,’ thereby disregarding the authority of the legislature and damaging the democratic system.
