Taiwan political campaigning intensifies ahead of 2026 elections

Political campaigning for the 2026 elections in Taiwan is intensifying across several key regions. In New Taipei City, Kuomintang candidate Lee Sze-chuan and Democratic Progressive Party candidate Su Chiao-hui have established joint campaign headquarters with local council candidates. A street poll in Tucheng District showed a narrow margin, with Lee leading Su 53 to 51.

In Keelung, incumbent Mayor Hsieh Kuo-liang faces a challenging reelection campaign. Recent polling indicates that 48.9% of citizens favor a change in leadership, with dissatisfaction particularly high among younger and highly educated demographics. Former Kuomintang Chairman Chu Li-luan has officially begun campaigning by supporting Hsieh, praising his inclusive leadership style.

In Hsinchu County and Zhubei City, the political landscape remains volatile following a breakdown in cooperation between the Blue and White camps. Democratic Progressive Party candidate Zheng Chao-fang has engaged in high-profile appearances alongside members of the Taiwan People's Party, sparking discussions regarding potential cross-party cooperation in the region.
