Taiwan Power Company clarifies air conditioning energy-saving myths

Taiwan Power Company held a press conference to clarify common misconceptions regarding air conditioning energy efficiency. The utility provider advised against using the ‘low wind’ setting, noting that it can increase compressor load by extending the time needed to cool a room; instead, ‘auto mode’ is recommended.

To improve comfort and efficiency, the company suggested increasing wind speed rather than lowering temperature during hot afternoons. For sleeping, using ‘sleep mode’—which raises the temperature by 1 to 2 degrees after falling asleep—is more effective than using timers. Additionally, the company noted that using a dedicated dehumidifier is more energy-efficient than using an air conditioner’s dehumidification mode.

Regarding inverter air conditioners, the company stated that while they are efficient, they should still be turned off during long absences, though they may remain on for trips under 30 minutes. To maximize circulation, the company recommends placing a circulation fan below the air conditioner outlet at a 45-degree angle toward the center of the room.

Taiwan Power Company reported that residential energy savings in 2025 reached 1.8 billion kWh, equivalent to the annual consumption of approximately 500,000 households and a reduction of 840,000 tons of carbon emissions.
