Taiwan President Lai Ching-te outlines economic and defense vision

During Taiwan’s National Day celebrations, President Lai Ching-te delivered a speech outlining a vision for the nation as a ‘City upon a Hill.’ He highlighted strong economic indicators, noting that annual growth is expected to exceed 11%, a 39-year high, and that Taiwan’s per capita GDP is projected to reach $45,332. To share these economic gains, the President announced plans for a 10,000 TWD ‘AI dividend’ for citizens next year, alongside increased subsidies for seniors and children, including a 5,000 TWD monthly growth allowance for those aged 0 to 18.

On security, President Lai emphasized the need for continued defense reform and the development of asymmetric capabilities and domestic defense industries to deter aggression. He stated that strengthening self-defense is intended for deterrence rather than provocation.

The celebrations also highlighted significant political friction. Legislative Yuan Speaker Han Kuo-yu used his address to warn against the growing divide between the executive and legislative branches, cautioning that such conflict could lead to perceptions of ‘fake democracy, true dictatorship.’ He specifically criticized the Executive Yuan’s refusal to countersign certain bills passed by the legislature. The Executive Yuan responded by asserting its constitutional duty to maintain checks and balances, arguing that some bills violated constitutional principles or infringed upon executive budgetary powers.
