Taiwan President Lai Ching-te defends record defense spending to deter war

During Taiwan's National Day celebrations, marking the 115th anniversary of the 1911 uprising, President Lai Ching-te delivered a speech emphasizing that the island will not surrender its freedom despite increasing military and grey-zone pressure from China. Lai stated that the recent boost in national defense investment is intended to deter war rather than provoke conflict, ensuring that any future dialogue can occur on a basis of dignity and parity.

The Taiwanese government has allocated a record NT$1.1 trillion (approximately US$34.5 billion) for defense spending through 2027, representing more than 3% of the nation's GDP. This budget increase aims to modernize the armed forces and enhance self-defense capabilities in response to China's growing military presence, including stealth fighters and aircraft carriers.

China's Taiwan Affairs Office responded by denouncing the speech, accusing President Lai of distorting facts and pursuing a separatist agenda. Meanwhile, Lai called on Indo-Pacific democracies to join forces to maintain regional stability and uphold the international rule of law.
