Taiwan private kindergartens decline as developers target land

Taiwan is experiencing a significant decline in private kindergartens due to the low birth rate. According to data from the Ministry of Education, the number of private kindergartens has dropped by 376 over the last ten years, reaching a decade-low in the 114th academic year.

While most major cities have seen a decrease in facilities, Taoyuan City has bucked the trend with a slight increase, attributed to birth subsidies and attractive housing prices for young families. In contrast, Taipei City has seen the largest decline.

As these institutions close, their land and buildings are becoming highly sought-after assets for real estate developers. These sites are prized for being located in mature, densely populated areas with large footprints and simple property rights. Notable recent acquisitions include the Yuan Shan Kindergarten in Kaohsiung for 701 million TWD and the Jia Bao Kindergarten in Chiayi for 155 million TWD.
