Taiwan public opinion poll shows rising trust in President Lai
The September 2026 Taiwan Public Opinion Survey conducted by Dai Li-an reveals significant shifts in political sentiment. President Lai Ching-te’s trust rating has reached 51.2%, marking the first time it has exceeded 50% since April of the previous year. His administration's overall satisfaction rate remains at 51.4%.
Regarding cross-strait relations, 75.7% of respondents stated they cannot accept the “One Country, Two Systems” model. Additionally, favorability toward the Chinese Communist Party has dropped to 7.5%, the lowest level since October 2020. In terms of identity, 95.6% of respondents identify as Taiwanese.
The poll also highlights a notable trend in Taipei City. KMT legislator Wang Hung-wei noted that the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) shows unexpectedly high support in the capital, with a 25.5% support rate, which she described as “unbelievable” given the city's traditional political leaning.
Economic sentiment remains divided along political lines. While 47.4% of the public views the current economic situation as good, views vary significantly by party affiliation: 70.5% of DPP supporters view the economy positively, whereas 65.7% of KMT supporters and 76.2% of Taiwan People's Party supporters view it negatively.
